Plenty of people call Guarulhos a dormitory town for São Paulo. It is not one. The city has a pulse of its own, and an international airport in the middle of it — and around that airport, things stay awake at hours when the rest of the country does not. How about staying awake in good company? Ask Rachel.

THE AIRPORT DISTRICT
Cumbica
The terminals sit inside Cumbica, and so do six of the nine hotels on this site. It is a district that runs on flight times: the right choice when the stay is one night and the alarm is set for a morning departure.

THE MODERNIST QUARTER
Parque Cecap
A housing estate designed in 1967 by Vilanova Artigas and Paulo Mendes da Rocha: three-story blocks raised on pillars, still lived in today, between the airport and the old town. Quiet and low-built, with a single hotel, the São Paulo Airport Marriott, 3 km from the runways.

THE CITY CENTER
Centro
Inland from the airport strip, and a different city altogether: towers, traffic, and a downtown that works for the people who live in it rather than for travelers. Better value on a longer stay, and streets you can actually walk.

GRU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Guarulhos Airport
Brazil's busiest airport, and the reason most visitors are in Guarulhos at all. Companions don't meet at the terminal; they come to your hotel. Writing to Rachel before you board is the simplest way to land with the evening already in motion.
